Hi, girls,
I've played some more with Game Star Mechanic and finally got to install Kodu on the XBox. Here are my thoughts on them:
- GSM is really simple to use. Going through the tutorials in order to win all the stuff you need to use in your own games may get boring at times, but it assures you already know what to do with them when you start creating a game. We can definitely make a game with it, but so far I don't think it would allow us to customize the avatars to have our Bavarian Cow and Cat Unicorn :-(
- Kodu has much better graphics, but I didn't like to use the XBox interface for the game creation process. And we are also limited to the elements provided by the game, so I don't think it is a good option. Besides, I fell asleep while playing one of the demo games.
I'll try to use one of the more complex tools to see how it goes. Has any of you tried them yet?
Best,
Julio
Hey Julio,
ReplyDeleteI second your opinions on Game Star Mechanic. We can definitely make a game with a lot of levels quite easily - but it won't really allow us to customize it. Also, the levels will be very reminiscent of computer games from the 1990s, lol.
I was trying Scratch over the weekend and I wasn't a huge fan. I don't know any programming, so that could be why I didn't like it. But it's really difficult to use and I don't know if we could end up making a "game." We might just end up making a sprite that could dance around.
Did anyone else have any success with their programs?

Hey guys,
ReplyDeleteI've been tinkering around on Game Maker 8. There are a lot of tutorials and I am very new at this, so I didn't get to the level of trying to create something. However, Julio's comments on GSM seem similar to the strengths and weaknesses of Game Maker 8. As far as I could see, you don't have the option to create your own avatar (but maybe I missed something). However, their tutorials are very detailed and cover the following: Your First Game, Creating a Scrolling Shooter, Maze Games, Platform Games, 3-Dimensional Games, Multiplayer Games (which might be useful for us since we were thinking of focusing on games that both parents and kids can play, although this is for the advanced game maker), and A First Person Shooter.
So, I think that this could work, but I don't know what would be better between this and GSM. We should talk about it tomorrow. Let's try to come up with an idea for our game tomorrow.
